Welcome to Leith

Feature Film / Documentary | PBS | 2016

Welcome to Leith is a feature documentary produced by The Cinemart, capturing the chilling true story of a small North Dakota town thrust into the national spotlight. When Craig Cobb, a notorious white supremacist, quietly moved to Leith in 2012 and began buying up property, the town's twenty-some residents were initially unaware of his intentions. But Cobb had a plan: to transform Leith into an all-white enclave and seize control of the local government by flooding the community with fellow extremists.

Set against the stark prairie landscape, the film documents how the townspeople—many of whom are farmers and ranchers—confronted this ideological threat. As Cobb’s presence grew more aggressive, the town’s mayor, Ryan Schock, was alerted by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Ryan Lenz, sparking a tense and deeply personal struggle for Leith’s future.

Directed by Michael Beach Nichols and Christopher K. Walker, and produced by The Cinemart, Welcome to Leith goes beyond the headlines to explore the limits of free speech, the vulnerabilities of democratic systems, and the resilience of a community under siege. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned an Emmy nomination for Best Documentary, cementing its place as a powerful reflection on extremism in modern America.
