THE PHarmacist

Docuseries | Netflix | 2020

The Pharmacist follows Dan Schneider, a small-town Louisiana pharmacist who, after the tragic shooting death of his son in 1999, becomes an unlikely investigator. When the police investigation stalls, Dan begins his own search for the killer, collecting clues, confronting suspects, and ultimately uncovering the truth. But his pursuit of justice doesn’t end there. In the years that follow, Dan notices a disturbing pattern: young people filling unusually high-dose prescriptions for OxyContin. What begins as a local concern grows into a personal crusade, as he works to expose a system that enables addiction and profit at the expense of human lives.

Produced by The Cinemart in collaboration with Netflix, the series blends true crime, personal narrative, and social investigation. The Cinemart’s team helped shape the story’s structure and tone—balancing Dan’s emotional journey with a larger critique of the institutions and industry failures that fueled the early opioid epidemic. Their approach foregrounds the individual stakes while never losing sight of the systemic story underneath.
